The volcanic mineral inside the pouch absorbs the smell, and the moisture, out of the shoes, gloves, skates… and into the mineral. This process is called adsorption. The mineral continues to draw the smell and moisture out of the stinky sports equipment for months.
Eventually, the mineral becomes saturated in smell and moisture molecules. Placing the pouch in the sun for the day or in a microwave for one minute, will release the stored moisture and re-energize the pouch. The smell is now trapped inside the mineral and has been converted to a nitrate. The smell does not release when the pouch is re-energized.
